White cliffs are one of the most beautiful beach hikes in New Zealand. On our way to Taranaki region, we slept at Tongaporutu village to visit the Three Sister beach. Although not very frequented (there are many travel guides which don't even mention it), the Three Sister Beach is as beautiful as the better-known White Cliffs. Although at the present time (Nov 2015) only two rocks stands (the third sister fell a few years ago), the image of the lonely beach with the two sisters and Mount Taranaki (if you are lucky enough to have a clear day) is worth the visit. On the way to the beach, we have to walk on the shore of Tongaporutu river, and we can find spherical rocks similars to the one at Moeraki Boulders. Likewise the White Cliffs, the visit is only possible on low tide, so, please visit the tide hours in this link before coming into the beach. Disobeying this piece of advice can be really dangerous, so, allow for a 2h margin around the low tide hour. The visit of the Three Sister beach can be easily done in 1h. // Los WhiteCliffs es uno de los recorridos por la playa más bonitos de Nueva Zelanda. De camino a la región de Taranaki, dormimos en el pueblo de Tongaporutu para visitar la Playa de Las Three Sisters. Aunque no es muy frecuentada (la mayoría de las guías de viaje ni tan siquiera la menciona), la playa de las Tres Hermanas es tan bonita como la más conocida de los WhiteCliffs. Aunque en la fecha actual (Noviembre 2015) sólo dos de las tres rocas (hermanas) siguen en pie (la tercera se derribó hace unos años), sólo por la imagen de la playa solitaria con las dos rocas y el Monte Taranaki (si tenemos suerte de coger un día despejado) merece la pena la visita. De camino a la playa, tenemos que andar por la orilla del río Tongaporutu, donde nos encontraremos rocas esféricas similares a las de la Playa de Moeraki Boulders. Al igual que la playa de los White Cliffs, la visita es sólo posible en marea baja, así que es necesario visitar este link antes de organizar la excursión para saber las horas de las mareas. Desobedecer este consejo puede traer consecuencias fatales, debido a que las olas te pueden aplastar contra los acantilados, o la vuelta al parking tengas que hacerla nadando contracorriente por el rio, nada recomendable. Por ello es recomendable tener un margen de unas 2h al rededor de la hora de marea baja. La visita puede hacerse fácilmente en 1h.

Once we enjoyed the Three Sister Beach, we headed to the White Cliff beach, in the town of Pukearuhe. For the visit of the White Cliffs, there is no parking place, you have to leave the car on the side of the road, so, arrive early, especially on high-peak season. The Doc website suggests three tracks to visit the area. We did the Pukearuhe to Wai Pingao Streem, coming back via the beach on low tide. Again, it is very important allow a 2h security margin around the low-ride hour, since the waves will smash you against the cliff walls otherwise. // Una vez visitada la playa de las tres hermanas, nos vamos hacia la playa de los White Cliffs, en el pueblo de Pukearuhe. Para la visita de los White Cliffs, no hay un aparcamiento específico, y tenemos que dejar la autocaravana a un lado de la carretera, así que se recomienda llegar pronto, especialmente en temporada alta, ya que el espacio es limitado. La página web del DOC sugiere tres itinerarios diferentes para conocer la zona. Nosotros hicimos el marcado como Pukearuhe al río Wai Pingao, volviendo por la playa. De nuevo, es importante darnos un margen de seguridad de 2h entorno a la hora de marea baja para evitar perder la vida en esta bonita excursión, de lo contrario acabaremos aplastados contra las rocas.

The track starts on a private road (you wont be able to drive in with the car) with houses and meadows for cattle. // El camino empieza en la carretera privada (no es posible pasar con el coche) llena de casas y pastos para el ganado.

At some point the road ends, and we have to follow the track. In theory the track is marked with the common orange-arrow you will find in most New Zealand touristic tracks, however, at some points it might be messy to find your way. So, a GPS with the track might be recommended. // Llegado un punto la carretera termina, y tenemos que seguir la pista sin asfaltar. En teoría la pista está marcada con la flecha naranja como la mayoría de los senderos en Nueva Zelanda, sin embargo, en algunos puntos es fácil perderse. 

The track has been plotted using the pipeline which makes its way through the forest on the Mt Davidsone sidehills, and descends to the Wai Pingao stream on a steep path. // El camino ha sido trazado siguiendo la tubería de gas que se hace paso a través del bosque por las laderas del Monte Davidsone, y desciende al arroyo de Wai Pingao por un camino un tanto inclinado.

The last part of the steep path is equipped with steps to avoid the erosion of the terrain. Also, during all the track, we can see possum traps everywhere. // La última parte del camino está equipado con escaleras y rejillas para evitar la erosión del terreno. Durante todo el recorrido podemos ver también un montón de trampas para Possums.

Once we get the river level, we follow the path parallel to the stream which will lead us to the beach. // Una vez llegamos al nivel del río, seguimos el arroyo paralelo y acabamos en la playa.

In case the tide is still too high to walk on the beach with a certain security margin, we can wait on the river mouth, and only when the level of the sea waters gets down start the way back to the parking walking through the beach. // En el caso de que la marea todavía esté muy alta, tenemos que dejar un cierto margen de seguridad hasta que podemos entrar.

The views of the cliffs are superb, and in a clear day we can see all the way to the end of the track. // Las vistas del acantilado son preciosas, en un día claro podemos ver hasta el final del recorrido.

 

Almost at the end of the track we will find this small waterfall (we might encounter a few others before this one, but they might not have running water depending on the season). // Casi al final del recorrido encontraremos esta pequeña cascada (existen otras antes de este punto, pero dependiendo de la época del año es posible que no lleven agua).

The tracks ends once we arrive at the parking level, where we will find a steep path used to have vehicle access to the sea. // El recorrido termina cuando llegamos a la altura del parking, encontraremos una cuesta empinada que se usa para dar un acceso al mar a las embarcaciones desde la carretera.

Summary / Resumen:

- Both the Three sisters and the White Cliffs walks are highly recommended activities in the Taranaki region. // Tanto la playa de Three Sister como los White Cliffs son actividades fáciles y muy recomendadas en la región de Taranaki.
- Both tracks are very easy, the only important consideration is to schedule both at low-tide, otherwise we might end up smashed against the cliff. // Ambos recorridos son fáciles, con la única condición de planificar la actividad durante la marea baja, de lo contrario acabaremos aplastados contra los acantilados.
