Jaizkibel is the the first mountain of the Pyrinees, where the mountain range meets the Bay of Biscay. Its altitude of 543m, with a great prominence, starts right at the shore of the sea. On its hillsides, we find the towns of Hondarribia, Irún, Lezo, Pasajes and Rentería, as well as the Guadalupe hermitage. However, the activity described on this post is not the ascent to mount Jaizkibel, but a stroll through Labetxu, also known as The Valley of the Colors. //
Jaizkibel es la montaña más occidental de los Pirineos, donde la cordillera se reune con el Mar Cantábrico. Con sus 543m, tiene una gran prominencia, ya que las faldas acaban directamente en el mar. En sus faldas se encuentras las poblaciones de Hondarribia, Irún, Lezo, Pasajes y Rentería, así como la Ermita de Guadalupe. Sin embargo, la actividad de este post no describe la ascensión a la cumbre de Jaizkibel, sino un paseo por Labetxu, también conocido como el Valle de Los Colores.
Labetxu is a master piece of the Nature, showing the process of Honeycomb weathering of the wind and salt water on the rocks of different colors and materials. The brook of Gaztarrotz, almost at its end, forged the valley revealing rocks of nice colors. // Labetxu es una obra de la naturaleza, muestra de la erosión alveolar del viento y del agua marina sobre rocas de distintos colores y materiales. El arroyo de Gaztarrotz, casi al llegar al mar, fue labrando el valle, dejando al descubierto las rocas de mil colores.
The activity starts on the road which goes across Jaizkiel. Once we are at the top, there are several parking places where we can leave the car. // La excursión la iniciamos en lo alto de la carretera que recorre Jaizkibel. Una vez subimos a la cima hay varios apeaderos donde podemos aparcar el coche.
A small opening in the fence signals the path we should follow to descend directly to Labetxu. // Una pequeña entrada en la verja marca el camino que tenemos que seguir para descender de forma directa a Labetxu.
As soon as a few hundred meters, we can enjoy the wonderful views of the Bay of Biscay Coast up to the city of San Sebastián. // Desde el primer collado, ya podemos disfrutar de las vistas maravillosas del litoral Cantábrico hasta San Sebastián.
A small hill after a few hundred meters starts revealing samples of the Honeycomb weathering erosion. // Una pequeña colina a unos pocos cientos de metros del inicio ya va dando muestras del proceso de erosión alveolar.
After these first rock formations, the famous sculpture of Jaizkibel, and the amazing coastline of Bay of Biscay. // Tras la colina, la escultura famosa... y el litoral Cantábrico
We descended all the way from the hill, where we can still distinguish the famous sculpture. // Venimos desde lo alto de aquella colina, donde se intuye la famosa escultura.
After a few kilometers, in the middle of a dense forest, another area of interesting rock formations, with honeycomb weathering and different colors. // Tras unos dos kilómetros, llegamos a las primeras formaciones rocosas interesantes, en medio de un denso bosque.
From this point, the way to follow is very confusing, not signaled by any mark, the exhuberant vegetation often hides the path, so, we have to make our way amongst the ferns and the small oaks. //
A partir de aquí el sendero no está nada claro hasta que descendemos a Labetxu. La exhuberante vegetación se come literalmente el sendero marcado, con lo que nos tenemos que ir abriendo paso entre los helechales y el robledal avanzando por Mitxitxola Mendia.
After finding back the path, with the aid of a GPS, we enters in a pinetree forest, ending in a cliff, where we have our first glimpse of Labetxu. We are at Putrekabia. // Tras recuperar de nuevo la senda con la ayuda del GPS nos adentramos en un pinar, que termina en un precipicio, desde donde ya se observa Labetxu. Estamos en Putrekabia.
The descent through the cliff can be risky with wet terrain, since it is very sloppery. There is a rope to make it easier. I would strongly recomend to follow the track in the other way, especially after rainy days, to avoid descend this part of the track. // La bajada por el precicipio es peligrosa con el terreno mojado, bastante resbaladiza. Hay un paso asegurado por una cuerda. Yo recomendaría hacer la ruta al revés para hacer este tramo de subida en vez de bajada, una caída en esta zona puede tener consecuencias graves.
Redish and purple colors show up on the walls in front of us. // Los colores rojizos y morados van apareciendo en las paredes de enfrente.
Rocks sculpted by the continous effect of wind and salty water. // Las rocas esculpidas por el viento
Descending to the ravine we get these wonderful views. // Vamos bajando poco a poco al fondo del barranco.
The combination of colors and cavities on the walls is rather fanciful. // La combinación de oquedades y colores en las paredes es bastante caprichosa.

Crossing to the other side of the ravine. // Cruzamos el barranco por donde podemos para alcanzar la otra orilla.

Although we wandered for a while on the area, I am sure we skipped some other interesting rock formations. Now we find our way back. // No nos cansamos de explorar la zona, pero seguro que nos hemos dejado un montón de rocas interesantes. Ahora encontramos marcas para el camino de subida.
Gaining elevation, we bid farewell to Labetxu. // Vamos ganando altura remontando el valle y nos despedimos de Labetxu.
The cliff in front of us is Putrekabia, where we descend. // La pared de enfrente donde se encuentran los pinos es el cortado de Putrekabia, por donde hemos descendido.
This rock looks like teenagers acne. // Acné juvenil en esta roca.
And this other, spider webs. // Y telas de araña en esta otra.
From this point, we resume the way up ascending through a pinetree forest. Again, the path within the forest is not evident at the beginning, and we might find useful to have the GPS handy. // A partir de aquí, retomamos el camino de subida que asciende por el pinar. De nuevo el camino no es evidente, al menos en la primera parte, hasta que el bosque se abre y nos permite tener una visión clara de la cima donde hemos dejado el coche... así que se recomienda tirar de GPS por si las moscas.

- Interesting and short activity to appreciate this wonder of the geology. // Preciosa y corta excursión para visitar esta maravilla de la geología.
- There are a few areas of difficult orientation, since the vegetation is very dense and it has eaten up the path to follow. Having the GPS handy might be very usefull. // Hay tramos de dificil orientación, ya que la vegetación se come literalmente el camino a seguir, siendo necesario tirar de GPS para no perderse.
- Given Jaizkibel is the first mountain the humid air has to surpass on its way to mainland, the area is often covered by fog, making the orientation harder // Dada la situación de Jaizkibel, la primera montaña que se encuentra el viento del mar, es muy normal que la cara norte esté sumida en una densa nieble, haciendo la orientación más dificil.
- There is just a dangerous stretch, the descent from Putrekabia. I would strongly recomend to follow this track in the inverse sense, to make this ascent on our way up. This stretch is rather slippery, and although there is a rope in the most dangerous part, a slip could have serous consequences. // Sólo hay un paso peligroso, la bajada de Putrekabia, se recomienda hacer la ruta al revés para tener este paso de subida. La bajada es bastante resbaladiza, hay un tramo asegurado por una cuerda, y una caída podría tener consecuencias graves.
