This post describes the ascent to Baños de Venus (Venus' Baths), a beautiful and isolated natural pool in La Pedriza del Manzanares. We have posted previous tracks on this area (see all entries tagged as La Pedriza), this one is an easy hike activity whose potential reward is a refreshing bath in a small pool in the middle of nowhere. Previous posts have introduced the main area of natural pools in Manzanares river. The problem with these pools is that in Summer time they tend to be overcrowded, since they are close to the parking spaces (La Rana, Cantocochino) and the restaurants. If we want to enjoy an isolated pool, we have to look for something distant from the well known and frequented areas.

The starting point, as most of the activities in La Pedriza, is located at Cantocochino parking space. As usual, be aware that this is a very frequented area all year round, so, you'd better get here early  in the morning since a limited number of vehicles can stay inside the Natural Park, otherwise, you will have to wait a long line to enter with your vehicle.

Once we start walking, we follow the Manzanares river on his right bank (upstream direction). We will see loads of natural pools (the ones more frequented).

One of the most reputed is La Charca Verde. Once we get to La Charca Verde, the track can become messy. We have to climb the rocks on our right and advance a few hundred meters through a not so evident path until we finally get back again to the evident track. Observe that this stretch is to avoid the rocks around the river, which can be very slippery (be extremely careful if the rock is wet, it can be dangerous).

Once we are back to the evident track we keep walking on the right bank of Manzanares river. The narrow path is evident. At some point, we leave the Manzanares river and start walking up the Arroyo Cuervo o de Los Hoyos de La Sierra creek. The path become narrower and not so evident, since it is a much less frequented area.

At some point we will come across a nice waterfall (the overexposed picture below does not really do justice to its beautifulness).

As we ascend, the path becomes messier and less evident.

At a given point (see waypoint in the GPX track), we cross the river (take off your shoes but be careful, the granitic riverbed is very slippery) as we see at the other side of the river rock piles signaling a better path. We could have proceeded on the right bank of the creek otherwise, but this shortcut makes the activity easier I think.

Now, after ascending around 150m altitude we get to the forest path, being much easier to advance. The rocky ridge on our left is Cuerda de Las Milaneras, I published a blog post a few weeks ago (http://viaje-a-ithaka.blogspot.com.es/2015/07/cuerda-de-las-milaneras.html).

We continue on the forest path until we reach a U-turn, at the 1500m level. At this point we leave the comfty path, get down to the creek we walked up before, and start walking on a narrow and rocky path. The path is signaled with rock piles, but can get very confusing. We left the path indeed by mistake and took us 10 minutes to find ourselves back on the right path, so, be careful not to miss any of the rock piles signaling the path. From this point, the shade of the pine tree forest we have been enjoyed finished, but we can enjoy of nice views of La Cuerda Larga instead.

Walking up the rocky path, we will come across this old rain gauge.

And after a few hundreds meters from the rain gauge, we will start hearing the sound of the waterfall.

We will descend carefully to the waterfall (again, watch out when the rock is wet, it can get very slippery) ...

And we can finally enjoy of Los Baños de Venus (Venus' baths). In this day of June, water temperature was 15º C (you really have to be brave to jump in), while water temperature on the lower pools, the ones closer to the parking spaces was around 20ºC. In mid July/August water temperature tends to be higher, as well as air-temperature, inviting you to take a refreshing bath.

The reward after this 8km walk is that the pool is usually lonely.

For the way back, we follow the same way until reaching the U-turn curve, and then we come back using the wide path on the pine tree forest. Following this wide path, very frequented by cyclist, we will arrive to the parking space after 8km.

Summary:
- Nice hike on La Pedriza to visit a less frequented area with the possibility of taking a bath.
- The ascent through the Hoyos de la Sierra creeks gives us a more beautiful landscape surmounting by the river side. Otherwise, if  we are looking for an easier hike, we can go directly walking on the wide path we have used to come back.
- Depending on the year, the temperature of the water on the upper pools can be still cool in mid June, although the volume of water through the waterfalls is greater. With the temperatures of July/August, the bath on the pool will be more comfortable.
