Glacier Franz Josef is one of the most accessible Glacier in New Zealand. The accumulation zone stays in the Southern Alps, in the same massif of Mount Cook (highest peak in New Zealand), at almost 3000m altitude, and descends after 12km to only 300m above the sea level.  The ablation zone of the of the Glacier ends in a narrow hanging valley, so, unless we flight the glacier with an Helicopter and the weather is not overcast (rare in this area), we only can see the tip of the Glacier.

The DOC, department of Conservation of New Zealand, suggests several trail options to visit the Glacier. The best ones, from my point of view, are the Alex Knob track and the Robert point.

Alex Knob track is probably the most interesting option, but the track is long (expect around 6-7h return) and in overcast days the views are very limited. That's why we decided to walk the Robert's Point track, a little shorter in duration, but a demanding activity requiring a good level of fitness.

Starting on the Lake Wombat car park (very limited place, arrive early), we follow the marked track. After a few hundreds meters we have this nice small lake, where, in a clear day, the surrounding mountains are reflected creating a beautiful image. The lake is a remain of the old glacier, when ice-mass reached the very bottom of the valley.

After a few meters we reach Douglas bridge to cross Waiho River.

Once we cross to the other side of the river, the track climbs up the valley in a dense forest. We have to cross another three rather impressive and shaky suspension bridges.

The views of the ice-carved valley are impressive. On the sides of the U-valley, there are a few large waterfalls descending the almost vertical rock walls.

The river bed at this point is quite wide, although the river only takes a small part of it. But watch out, the water flow can quickly change, several persons has lost their lifes when trying to cross the river in sudden swelling.

The track enters in a dense forest. This is the most dangerous part of the activity, when wet, the rock becomes very slippery.

When we reach Robert's point, there is a small wooden-platform with a view to the glacier and the valley. On an overcast day, we only can see the tip of the glacier, a narrow ice tongue embedded in between two rock walls.

The descent goes down using the same track. When rainy or wet, it can be more dangerous than the ascent, watch out. At the walk down through forest, it seems that a hobbit or an elf can appear at any moment...

Summary / Resumen:

- Interesting track, and shorter than the Alex Knob track. The views are much better than the standard Glacier walk, so, the effort is well worth the views of the Glacier.
- In an overcast day, we will be able only to see the tip of the ice-mass. In any case, much better than the other two suggestions (Alex Knob and standard track) // En un día nubado, sólo podremos ver una pequeña parte de la lengua glaciar, en cualquier caso, se ve más que las otras dos sugerencias (Alex Knob y el paseo habitual al glaciar).
- When rainy or wet, the rocks on the track can get very slippery, and the terrain muddy, although a fall is not mortal, it can be very dangerous.
- There is a small hut, Hende Hut, not suitable for overnight, but enough for a rain cover.
