Continuing our trip in New Zealand, we stayed two days at Mount Cook National Park. Unfortunately, this time the weather was not kind with us, and we had to cancel the activities we brought planned to this part of the island. The original idea was to climb up Mount Olivier, where you can get a nice look-out to Mount Cook. However, the weather was foggy and even snowy, so, we decided to find another alternative activity where we could indeed see anything further from 100m around us. We finally decided to walk the Tasman Glacier Valley, where we can see the tip of the Tasman Glacier ending in the Tasman Lake. // Continuando nuestro viaje a Nueva Zelanda, pasamos dos días en el Parque Nacional del Monte Cook. Desafortunadamente esta vez el tiempo no se portó bien con nosotros, y tuvimos que cancelar las actividades que teníamos planeadas. La idea original era subir al Monte Ollivier, desde donde hay unas vistas privilegiadas del Monte Cook, y recorrer el Valle Hooker. Sin embargo, había bastante niebla e incluso nevaba en altura, así que decidimos hacer otra actividad en alguna otra zona donde pudiéramos ver más allá de 100m. Finalmente nos decidimos por el Valle Glaciar Tasman, desde donde podemos ver la lengua del glaciar del mismo nombre.

From the Mount Cook N.P. visitor center, there is a paved road going directly to Tasman Valley. At around 100m from the parking place, we can see the Blue Lakes, a couple of small lakes formed with the water filtered through the moraine of the Glacier, used as ice-rinks in past time. If we climb up the moraine close to the parking, we can see the whole Tasman Lake, as well as the front side of the Glacier. // Desde el centro de visitantes del Parque Natural del Monte Cook, hay una carretera pavimentada que se dirige directamente al Valle Tasman. A unos 100m del parking, podemos ver los Lagos Azules, dos pequeños lagos que se forman por el agua que se filtra de la morrena, y que antiguamente eran usados como pistas de hielo. Si subimos a la morrena que tenemos en frente de nosotros podemos ver todo el Lago Tasman, así como la parte frontal del glaciar en la lejanía.

In order to make the activity a little longer, we decided to extend the track using the Ball Shelter track, a path going up parallel to the side-moraine of the glacier. // Con el fin de alargar la actividad, la extendimos haciendo el camino que lleva hasta la cabaña de Ball, el camino discurre paralelo a la morrena lateral que formó el glaciar a medida que su anchura disminuía con el retroceso de los hielos.

We walked up the 6km path, we did not reach the Ball Shelter though, surrounded by the mountains forming the Glacier Valley. // Ascendimos los 6km de valle, pero no llegamos a alcanzar el Ball Shelter. El camino discurre por el estrecho valle entre la morrena glaciar y las montañas que formaban el antiguo valle glaciar cuando el hielo cubría todo el valle de lado a lado.

We can see two narrow paths in the side-moraine which offer a nice look-out to the Glacier. We guess that as the Glacier is receding, more lookouts points have been formed by hikers in order to see the end of the glacier tongue. // En la morrena lateral se aprecian dos pequeños caminos que ascienden hasta la parte de arriba y desde donde tenemos vistas privilegiadas a la masa de hielo. A medida que el Glaciar va retrocediendo supongo que la gente va creando nuevos caminos para poder ver siempre el frente de hielo.

A particularity of the Glacier is that the ice is completely covered by grey sand due to the strong erosion. Only at the front-line, where the glacier meets the lake, we will be able to see the glacier-ice. The Lake, as most of Glacier lake, has a milky color due to the sediments transported by the ice. // Una particularidad de este glaciar es que el último tramo está totalmente cubierto de arena gris debida a la gran erosión de las partes bajas, sólo en el frente de hielo podemos realmente apreciar el hielo glaciar. El lago, como la mayoría de Lagos con Glaciares activos, tiene un color lechoso debido a la cantidad de sedimentos suspendidos en el agua.

What we can see is indeed a very small part of the Tasman Glacier, since the complete Glacier is 27km long and up to 13km wide. The overcast sky did not enable us to see the upper part of the glacier tongue. // Lo que podemos ver es realmente una pequeña parte del Glaciar Tasman, que tiene 27km de longitud y hasta 13 de ancho. El día cubierto que nos salió no nos permitió ver más allá de kilómetro y medio por encima de donde estábamos.

Some of the sections of this path are a natural path for snow and rock avalanches, you are advised not to stop on this danger points. The dimension of dejection cones, which reach the path, are clear signals that it is not a good idea to spend a lot of time at these points. // Algunas de las partes del camino recorrido son un camino natural de avalanchas de nieve y roca, así que se recomienda pasar estas partes lo más rápido posible sin pararse. Las dimensiones de los conos de deyección formados, que llegan claramente hasta el camino, son un claro signo del peligro que corremos.

 

Once we reached the upper part of the walk, we climbed up to the side-moraine lookouts points to take some shoots of the Glacier. We were unfortunate this time and we did not see any ice slide of the glacier, although the loud bangs of the blocks falling to the lake could be heard from the distance. // Una vez llegamos al punto más alto del recorrido nos subimos a la morrena lateral para ver mejor el Glaciar. Desafortunadamente no pudimos ver ningún desprendimiento de hielo, pero podíamos ir perfectamente el estruendo de los mismos cayendose en alguna otra parte de la lengua glaciar.

On the way back to Tekapo lake, we had a chance to catch a glimpse of Mount Cook, which we were unable to catch the two days before. At least, we left Mount Cook National Park with a view of the main attraction. // En el camino de vuelta al Lago Tekapo, tuvimos una oportunidad de ver el Monte Cook, que habíamos sido incapaces de ver los dos días anteriores. Por lo menos nos fuimos del Parque Natural del Monte Cook pudiéndolo ver, aunque sea desde la distancia.

Summary / Resúmen:

- Easy and accessible track to visit Tasman Glacier. Once you go to Tasman Glacier Valley to visit the moraine and blue lakes, I think it is worth the 3h extra effort to have the chance to climb up to the side moraine where you can get a better and closer view of the ice-tongue. // Fácil y accesible itinerario para visitar el Glaciar Tasman. Una vez vamos al Valle Glaciar de Tasman y visitamos la morrena frontal y los Lagos Azules, merece la pena hacer este esfuerzo de 3 horas extras para podernos subir a las morrenas laterales y ver así el glaciar desde más cerca.
- The track is a good alternatives to other more interesting tracks such as Hooker Valley or Mount Ollivier summit ascent when the weather do not give us a chance to do those activities. // Esta actividad es una alternativa interesante a otras como Hooker Valley o Monte Ollivier cuando el tiempo no acompaña para hacer estas otras actividades.
- At the Mount Cook N.P. visitor center we have all kind of amenities and the Edmount Hillary Museum, it is worth a visit to know a little more about the history of the Mount Cook. // En el centro de visitantes del Monte Cook, tenemos todas las comodidades posibles, y merece la pena visitar el Museo de Edmount Hillary, donde podemos conocer un poco más sobre la historia alpina del Monte Cook.
