Nelson Lakes National Park is situated in the Northern part of the South Island. It comprehends the two Lakes, Rotoiti and Rotoroa, and two Mountain Ranges, Saint Arnaud and Mount Robert. The area is populated by dense forests and low mountains, making the region a popular tourist destination. The area is very popular for the activities you can do, such as fishing, skiing, mountaineering, kayaking. In our visit to Nelson Lakes National Park we climbed up Mount Robert, one of the one-day hiking activities suggested by the D.O.C. // El Parque Nacional de Los Lagos Nelson está situado en la parte Norte de la Isla Sur de Nueva Zelanda. Incluye dos lagos, Rotoiti y Rotoroa, dos cadenas de montañas, Saint Arnadu y Monte Robert. El área está poblada por densos bosques y pequeñas y redondeadas montañas, haciendo de la región un destino turístico popular. El area es muy conocida por la variedad de actividades que podemos hacer en ella, tales como pesca, ski, montañismo, kayaking. En nuestra visita a los Lagos de Nelson, subimos el Monte Robert, una de las ascensiones recomendadas por el DOC en la zona.

Mount Robert raises above Lake Rotoiti. Most of its hillsides are populated by dense forests of New Zealand beeches, until we reach the bushline, where the floor is covered by green grass. Starting from the upper parking place, the ascent was performed via the Pinchgut track, and the descend using the Paddy's track. On the track, we can find three very well conserved huts (being one of them reserved to members of a ski club). // El monte Robert se alza por encima del Lago Rotoiti. La mayor parte de sus laderas están cubiertas por densos bosques de haya neo zealandesas, hasta que llegamos a la línea donde se acaba el bosque, donde el suelo está cubierto por un tapiz de hierba verde. Empezando del parking superior, la subida la hicimos por el camino de Pinchgut, y la bajada usando el camino de Paddy's. En el camino nos encontramos con tres refugios bastante bien conservados (uno de ellos es privado, sólo para el uso de los miembros de un club de ski).

Starting from the parking place, we have to first ascend through a dense forest of New Zealand beaches. // Empezando en el parking de arriba, primero tenemos que ascender por un bosque de hayas neo zelandesas.

We will soon reach the bushline, where we can enjoy the views over Rotoiti Lake, and the surrounding green valleys. // Enseguida alcanzamos la línea de bosque, donde ya tenemos espectaculares vistas del Lago Rotoiti y de los valles verdes que lo rodean.

Close to the summit, we find this hut, in a perfect state of conservation, where we could cook and stay overnight. // Cerca de la cumbre nos encontramos con este refugio metálico, en perfecto estado de conservación, donde se puede cocinar y pasar la noche.

The views from the summit are amazing, not only we can see the entire lake, but the valleys surrounding Mount Robert are equally amazing. // Las vistas desde la cima son impresionantes, no sólo podemos ver el lago, sino que todos los valles que rodean al Mount Robert son preciosos.

Idyllic greenish landscapes. // Paisajes idílicos.

On the summit we can decide either to keep on the ridge all the way to Julius summit, or use Paddy's track to come back to the starting point. Since we did not have enough time to hike through the whole ridge, we went down using Paddy's track. // En la cumbre podemos decidir si seguimos por la arista hasta la cumbre del Monte Julius, o usamos Paddy's track para volver a nuestro punto de partida. Como no disponíamos de mucho tiempo volvimos por Paddy's track.

Walking on the broad ridge line, we get a nice perspective of the Lake from above. // Andando por la ancha arista tenemos una bonita perspectiva del Lago visto desde arriba.

Bushline hut is very well conserved as well, open all year round, it is located in an idyllic place to stay overnight. // El refugio de Bushline está también muy bien conservado, abierto todo el año, está situado en un lugar idílico para pasar la noche.

The track uses the hillside in front of the lake to descend, heading to Northwest. // El camino de vuelta usa la cara norte de la montaña, frente al lago, para descender hacia el parking.

After a few kilometers, we are back to the unpaved road leading to the parking place. // Después de unos pocos kilómetros estamos de vuelta en la carretera sin asfaltar que nos llevará al parking desde donde comenzamos la actividad.

Summary / Resúmen:

- Nice and easy hike in Nelson Lakes National Park. Views are amazing, the technical difficulty is close to null, there are three huts in case we have to shelter from bad weather. // Fácil y bonita excursión en el Parque Nacional de los Lagos de Nelson. Maravillosas vistas, dificultad técnica muy baja, y hay tres cabañas donde nos podemos refugiar en caso de mal tiempo, o que tengamos que pasar la noche.
- There are toilets in the parking place, I have not seen any drinking water point in the whole track though. The unpaved road to the upper parking place is in good state, at least at the time we did the activity. // Hay aseos en el parking, pero no he visto ninguna fuente o punto donde beber agua en todo el recorrido. La carretera sin asfaltar para subir al parking de arriba aunque un poco larga, estaba en perfecto estado al menos en el momento de realizar esta actividad.
